What is art? — A Conversation with Joseph Beuys brings us the voice of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Joseph Beuys synthesizes in this "workshop conversation" (as presented in the subtitle of the German edition) some of the central assumptions of his work, the motivations and perceptions underlying the concept of "social sculpture," and his expanded conception of art. The dialogue — between various participants and throughout the day of April 23, 1979 — explores the idea of art inseparable from all forms of life, based on critical thinking about capitalism and democracy, and encompasses reflections on ecology, politics, and new forms of money.
