It is said that António Variações was an artist ahead of his time. That he was perhaps too modern for a Portugal that was still so gray and conservative, a country whose villages lost in the countryside had stopped in time and had no room for restless spirits like that of António Joaquim Rodrigues Ribeiro.

Variações, who decided to call himself Variações, made it on his own. And when he achieved what he had always dreamed of, when everyone in the street greeted him, when his music exploded on the radio, he died. Too soon, we all say. But even with his short life and music, he left us all a unique and extraordinary legacy that still inspires so many Portuguese musicians and artists today.
